Young Artists’ Playwright Festival 2020

Western Reserve Playhouse is thrilled to announce our 

Young Artists’ Playwright Festival.

This One-Act Competition for Young Playwrights is an exciting new festival at Western Reserve Playhouse!  With the help of The Ohio Arts Council Artie Grant we are able to make this Festival a reality!

The 10 plays selected for this festival will be produced and performed on October 25, 2020 at Western Reserve Playhouse for one afternoon only.

Western Reserve Playhouse Company members will grace the stage to perform the works but, there is going to be catch, WRP will also be looking for youth to direct, design and help promote this festival! Yes, the youth will be taking over WRP!

Each play and youth production staff selected will have the opportunity to be mentored with professionals in their fields to make this a unique experience for all involved!

FESTIVAL GUIDELINES AND ELIGIBILITY 

    Plays must be unpublished, non-musical one-acts not exceeding 10 minutes in length. (10- page maximum, not counting the Title Page or Cast of Characters page). It is your responsibility to make sure your play’s running time meets the guidelines.
    The submitted play should not be committed to publication with another company or otherwise encumbered. Should an entrant accept a publication offer elsewhere after submission of the script, the entry must be withdrawn from our competition.
    Plays may be written by a solo writer or by a group. For group play submissions, all members of the group MUST be in the same age bracket 5-8, 9-11, 12-14 or 15-19) for the entry to be valid. Any submissions with groups of differing age brackets (for example, with a 9-year old author and a 14-year old author) will be disqualified. However, each writer must be under the age of 19. (19 years old or younger as of May 1, 2020.)
    While there are no limitations as to genre or subject matter, plays should be suitable for school aged audiences. Plays must have two or more characters and no more than 10 characters.
    Each author or group may submit one play only, in each category.

                     Solo Playwright

    Each category will be broken down into these age brackets:
                5-8
                9-11
                12-14
                15-19
    Plays must be submitted according to the guidelines in the “How To Submit” section.

DEADLINE All play submissions must be received no later than August  1, 2020.

All submissions must include:

  1. A Title Page containing the following information:

                Title of Play

                Name of Playwright or Playwrights

                Contact Email (be sure to use an email address that accepts outside email)

                Home Address

                Phone Number

                A signed Parental or Guardian Statement with the following statement: I attest that I ____________am 19 or under as of May 1,                    2020. (If selected you will need to show proof of age)

2. A Cast of Characters Page immediately following the title page.

3. The script its.elf, in standard format, should begin on the next page. All scripts must have page numbers (you don’t need to number the title page, Cast of Characters page or the first page of the script itself).

4. Scripts must not exceed 10 pages  (not counting the Title Page or Cast of Characters Page) Scripts must be either legibly written (no cursive) or typed in 12pts font, printed and stapled together or bound. See  an example on our website. Be sure to keep a copy of the original, as plays will not be returned.

Scripts that fail to follow the submission directions may be disqualified at the sole discretion of Western Reserve Playhouse.

WINNERS ANNOUNCED September 1, 2020.

Winners will be announced via email and on the Western Reserve Playhouse website.

Please go to www.thewrp.org to get a packet to help you in your playwright adventure (see links below).

Winners must be able to attend the festival and be available to meet with Western Reserve Playhouse either in person or via FaceTime to discuss the process. Additional entrants may be designated Finalist for outstanding writing.

Young Artists ages 10-19 that are interested in these positions must follow the Submission Requirements.  Those selected for this festival will be notified on August 1, 2020

Submission Requirements:

Submit a one page letter to the Festival committee on why you would like to be selected to participate in this program. Production Staff Positions are as follows:

    Director
    Costumer
    Marketing

Submit two letters of recommendations using our form found on the Festival portion of our website. www.thewrp.org

Those selected will be notified via email by August 1, 2020

Those selected must be able to be able to commit to a rehearsal schedule during the following dates: October 11-23, 2020. In addition, they must be able to attend the run-through October 24, 2020 from 10-3PM and the performance on October 25, 2020 at 2:00 PM.

Each Young Artist selected to participate will be paired with a professional to mentor them in their selected field.
